Foundation ewes

Foundation Ewe Application  NOTE - Members can login to GLM Registry  to submit online

Once approved, the Foundation ewe can be used to start new lines of Registered NAWSA Wensleydales provided she is bred via A.I. with frozen semen from NAWSA approved UK registered rams. The registered Foundation Ewe carries a blood percentage of 0%. The breeder does not have to be the owner of the ewe, the ewe may be leased. In either case a copy of the ewe's registration papers must be submitted with the application. The application must be submitted by a member of the NAWSA and include payment of application fee.

The non-Wensleydale ewes used in the first cross must be registered with one of the following U.S. breed associations. No other foundation breeds shall be recognized.

  • Cotswold - American Cotswold Record Association
  • Cotswold Breeders Association, Black Cotswold Society
  • Leicester Longwool - Leicester Longwool Sheep Breeders Association The NAWSA strongly discourages the use of Leicester Longwools due to their low population in the U.S.
  • Lincoln - National Lincoln Sheep Breeders Association

Find the downloadable Foundation Ewe form here, or go to GLM Registry and fill it out online.

This can be a confusing process. Please contact the Registrar or a member of the Board of Directors with any questions. We are happy to help.
