THE
REGISTRY
The North American Wensleydale Sheep Association,
a group of breeders and others dedicated to the development and
promotion of Wensleydale sheep in North America, was formed during
the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville,
KY in November 1999.
The United States Department of Agriculture
currently prohibits importing of live animals and embryos from the
United Kingdom. The North American Wensleydale Sheep Association,
with the enthusiastic encouragement and support of the Wensleydale
Longwool Sheep Breeders Association, U.K., has developed guidelines
for up-grading by using imported semen in order to establish the
Wensleydale breed on this continent.
USDA/APHIS regulations mandate that in order to
purchase semen from the United Kingdom, you must be enrolled in
the Voluntary
Scrapie Flock Certification Program (VSFCP). In addition, any
sale of F1 offspring resulting from the use of this semen must be
to those enrolled in the federal scrapie program. There are no restrictions
for the sale of F2 animals (F1 x F1). Contact the federal
veterinarian in your state for enrollment information.
Our membership is dedicated
to keeping the renown quality of the Wensleydale's wool and supplying
top quality wool for hand spinning and weaving.
